Auntie Series 3 Print

Jasmine Anokye

The Auntie Series is an ode to the expressive style and role of Aunties within the familial structure.  In African culture, the “self” is not separate from the world, it is united and intermingled with the natural and social environment. The notion that “it takes a village to raise a child” runs deeply within our culture. Aunties, across cultures, are beloved, a constant part of the background flooding with understanding, praise and at times unbiased discipline parents cannot provide. Outside of Western culture, every older woman who is not your mother or grandmother is called “auntie” as a show of respect. Aunties serve as contemporary role models. Whether it was gossip or advice, Aunties offer an effortless sense of wisdom one simply cannot receive from a maternal figure. They serve as playful, supportive, loving nurturing figures, especially beneficial for young girls who benefit from a positive female role model.

This five portrait series highlight the effortless style of Aunties with a focus on color theory. Each figure represents the color of the traditional rainbow, ranging from shades of reds to violets.
